yes-no-types.jpegWalk me through your resume. Also known as tell me about yourself. The most common interview question you'll get, the one that you're guaranteed get asked. Every single interview is walk me through your resume. Also known as tell me about yourself, virtually every single interview is going to start with this question. There's very little reason why interviewer would not ask this. So you need to make sure that your answer sounds authentic, as well crafted, and that hits on all of the relevant points of your own career. I would also argue that it's the most important interview question, because it allows you to establish a personal connection with the interviewer. It's also the question where you'll be given the most amount of time to speak.

So my opinion, a good answer to walk with you as may is going to be 1 to 1 . 5 minutes in life. This is enough time to cover pretty much all your basic biographical details, as well as talk about two or three key experiences. I find that if it's any longer, you might find yourself spending too much time on a single experience, and you might also start to bore the interviewer. But if it's any shorter, I think you're probably missing it on key details. So always try to think and it's not really a strict rule, but 1 to 1 . 5 minutes. So if you're an MBA with a whining career and several different job changes, you should skinny that down, pick the most relevant ones. You're only talking for a minute and a half, but even if you're a freshman, I think you should try to get to that 1 minute Mark. That might mean you just talk about your interest and things that excite you, but it's still better than talking for two short period of time.

In terms of the structure, here's how it break down that minute to minute a half. You have 10 seconds where you're just talking about your biographical details to say your name. You'll say what school you go to. You'll say maybe what city you're from if you want to get a little bit more personal. That's pretty much you don't have to over think this step. And after the introduction, you're gonna segue into what a lot of people refer to as the spark. The spark is kind of the events, or the series of events helps you validate your interest in finance.

A lot of people start with this, because it's a very clean way to open up a narrative. This could be anything from a club you joined to, maybe a mentor you had, or class he took. The specific spark doesn't matter too much. It's more about being able to crafted, bringing out what's relevant from that. And then kind of combining it and weaving it with the rest of your career choices. If you feel like you don't have a good spark, it's kind of your job to develop one. This could be something from starting investing blog, again, joining a club, maybe taking a specific course, anything like this that just helps you frame the conversation.

Well. For me, initially, it was case competitions with decker that introduced me to kind of the world of business. And later it would become my involvement with the student investment club that introduced me to the world of investing. So it doesn't have to be super creative. Honestly, most of the time it's just gonna be a club, but you need to have some kind of spark. The younger you are the more likely to discuss this. When I was doing my PE interviews, I didn't really mention the spark as much, but during my banking interviews, I 100 %.

After you spark, you want to talk about two or three key experiences. You probably have had a lot of experiences, but I would just think what maps best to resume, because a lot of times the question will be walk me through resume. I would just talk chronologically, but the main experiences and what you kind of took away from them. It should honestly be pretty simple.

Again, you only have a minute and a half or so, every kind of role should maybe be between 15 and 20 seconds. It doesn't have to be a complicated task that you did could be something like last summer I was an intern at a private wealth management firm. I helped coordinate capital calls with different investors we had and is also introduced to the concept evaluation. One of my main tasks was making sure that my manager had new leads to reach out to. And that's all you kind of need to talk about. It's a couple of sentences that just frames the work that you did in a given situation. Keep in mind what you say you should track your actual resume.

If you're having difficulty writing resume, we do have a resume cover letter course on our website where you can go through my actual investment banking and private equity resumes. The four thing and it feels kind of silly to talk about, but you need to make sure that you're speaking and clear sentences, you can maintain reasonably comfortable eye contact. I think the rule for eye contact is you want to have 50 % eye contact when you're talking, and then 70 % eye contact when you're listening.

Now if you're not sure if you meet the standard for what is clear communication, my advice is just to record yourself, just take your webcam your phone, and try to give a practice answer and see if you can get through a clean answer in one go. I feel like you get over a lot of the cringe embarrassing components when you watch yourself gonna have to present an answer. I also think there's a really big emphasis on doing mock interviews. When I was recruiting for banking. I think I did maybe 30 to 40 investment banking mock interviews with people. In the older year. It's probably overkill for freshmen or sophomore. But I think you should at least be doing between five and seven, doing them with your peers, doing them with potential mentors. You just need to get your reps in, because your first time practicing should not be in the interview room. Last, you want to try to connect points to the job that you're applying to.

Whenever possible for example if, you interned at a private wealth manager. Maybe you can mention that one of your clients was a private equity firm, and you got to study the portfolio and look at how their money was generated. And that picture interest into this kind of job. Maybe you could be as simple as you were in the technology group on your investment club. And that's why you want to do growth equity. That's why you're familiar with these sass businesses. You always want to try to connect Information from your own resume into what you're applying for.

And then finally, you'll to summarize your experiences in maybe 10 seconds or so, can just mention them again and then try to weave in. That's why you want to work at that particular firm. A lot of people end this question by saying, and that's what brings me here today, including myself, so i, feel Free to use that line. So maybe this will be helpful, but I'm gonna give you kind of the practice interview answer that I was giving to investment banks and private equity firms as a Junior. So here we go. Thanks for having me here, and I'd be happy, too. My name is matt ting, and I grew up in Toronto, Canada. I'm currently student at the IV business school where I study business administration at school and part of the western investment club. This is a club that actively managers about $200,000, and it really introduced me to the concepts, evaluation, and investing.

Common_Interview_Questions_and_How_to_Answer_the.jpeg

That's what really kind of accelerated my interested finance. One interesting project for the club. We did a stock pitch of umbrella, which is a fabulous video semiconductor company that i've been studying this past summer. We actually built a discounted cash flow as well as cops analysis and reach out to some of their customers to really try to understand how the business would do. And that's what really introduced me to technology and investing and kind of merging those two interests. This past summer, I entered at Oxford management, which is a Toronto based search fund that owns and operates are remote video surveillance company. Without this business, I was able to work directly with CFO to help manage cash flow operations as well as update the companies. Financial model, I also had a big project to overhaul the inventory management system and managed the capital expenditures across all of the Canadian offices.

The combination of my time on the investment club, as well as in turning at the search fund, has really affirmed to me that I will start my career in finance. Specifically. I'm looking at investment banking firms in New York. Your firm has a fantastic technology medium telecom group, and I think my combination of my excellent studies, my time on the investment club as well as at a search fund. It's been excellent candidate for this job, and that's what brings me here today. So haven't done that for a long time, but hopefully helps you bring your own answer and give you a sense for the kind of details you should include.
